Centres of Excellence in support of ESDM

(A) National Centre for Flexible Electronics (NCFlexE):

National Centre for Flexible Electronics (NCFlexE) has been set up at IIT Kanpur with an outlay of Rs 132.99 Cr for 5 years. Out of the total outlay Rs 111.12 Crore will be funded by MeitY and contribution of IIT Kanpur will be Rs 21.87 crore.

Flexible electronics is an emerging area of electronics which is based on the monolithic integration of electronic components on amorphous substrates which typically results in products that are large in size with length scales ranging from a few centimetres as in sensors, to a few decimetres as in displays and lighting, to several metres as in organic solar cell based panels.

This is in contrast to conventional microelectronics where integrated circuits (ICs) are fabricated on crystalline substrates and length scales are typically only a few millimetres. At the heart of this revolution lie two significant capabilities: designing products that are flexible and form fitting and their manufacturing by printing based processes. The combination of the two may lead to roll-to-roll (R2R), large volume and high throughput manufacturing. There are no well established players in flexible electronics at the moment and even those who are actively involved have been in it for a relatively short period.

The Indian industry must make use of this opportunity to get a foothold in the emerging market for large area flexible electronics. Overall objective of NCFlexE is to spur development of ecosystem for flexible electronics in the country. The Centre has been mandated to develop technology prototypes, in PPP mode through industry collaborations, on

  • Printable electronic tags
  • Anti-counterfeiting for medicine packages
  • Flexible solar module
  • Circuit lab on paper
  • OLED lighting
  • Flexible temperature sensor
  • Conductive inks

(B) National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS):

NCETIS has been set up at IIT Bombay with an outlay of Rs 83.89 crore for 5 years. The objective of the Centre is to develop state-ofart- technologies which are vital to our security agencies (Police and Para military forces) and for providing rescue and relief operations. This centre has been set up for addressing internal security needs of the nation on continuous basis and to deliver technologies/prototypes required for internal security and to promote domestic industry in internal security area within the country. NCETIS will act as national nodal facility, to cater to the requirements of homeland/internal security technology requirements and technologies for disaster management.

The Centre has been mandated to develop technology prototypes, in PPP mode through industry collaborations on:

  • Broadband Wireless Communications System for Public Protection and Disaster Recovery (B-PPDR)
  • Ground Penetration Radar
  • Video Surveillance and Analytics
  • Robotic All-Terrain Vehicle
  • GIS for Spatial Data Security
  • Handheld explosive detectors
  • Thermal Imaging

(C) National Centre of Excellence in Medical Electronics and Bio-Physics :

National Centre of Excellence on Medical Electronics and Bio-Physics is being set up at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone Limited (AMTZ), Visakhapatnam with a total outlay of Rs.32.02 crore over a period of three years. Out of the total outlay, Rs.18.67 crore will be funded by MeitY. The project is being implemented by the Kalam Institute of Health Technology (KIHT), AMTZ.

The project has been conceptualized to strengthen the medical electronics devices manufacturing eco-system in the country with suitable innovations, import substitution and value addition, etc. The objectives of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) are to provide functional research support to design and prototyping for manufacturing in Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM), conduct R&D for manufacturing of electronics and integration of components to make functional critical parts (assembly/ sub-assembly) for medical devices, carrying out Bio-Physics research such as Bio-Organs/ Electro-organs, etc., and research and prototyping of key electro-potential based components, etc.

Overall, the CoE aims to carry out various R&D activities to strengthen innovation, IP creation and prototype modelling for medical device manufacturers, including Electro-Biomaterial technology product manufacturers, etc.

(D) Centre of Excellence (CoE) on “Next Generation AMOLED Displays, OLED Lighting and OPV products: Development of disruptive Technologies to enable cost effective electronic component manufacturing in India”

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has approved a project titled “Next Generation AMOLED Displays, OLED Lighting and OPV products: Development of disruptive Technologies to enable cost effective electronic component manufacturing in India” being implemented at IIT-Madras (IIT-M) in association with stakeholders viz. M/s. Tata Sons Ltd., DRDO and M/s. Velankani Group. As of now the total budget outlay of the project is INR 4160 Lakhs, including a Grant-in-Aid of INR 3465 Lakhs from MeitY.

The physical deliverables of the project are to develop prototypes for the AMOLED Display (AMOLED Panel + Driving Board); OLED Lighting (+ Driving Board) and OPV Power Source for Mobile Phones (+ Charge Controller & Rechargeable Battery).
