In Bio-informatics is of special relevance to issues like understanding country specific human, plant and livestock diseases, bringing down the time taken in drug discovery process and rising to the challenges of climate change. Bio-informatics holds the key to unlock some of these issues concerning ordinary mortals and society at large.
The extensive research in the area of Genomics, Proteomics, DNA sequencing etc, throughout the world has led to the explosion in the size and scale of genomic data. This data is growing at an exponential rate and this information has to be refined, reviewed and reclassified in a manner that it enables a better understanding of the genome, proteome, phenotype etc. and Bioinformatics enables analyzing strong knowledge generation from this raw genomic data.
The main objective of Bioinformatics research is to improve human health and longevity. The road map for this is to identify DNA sequences responsible for various genetic and other common diseases like arthritis, cardiac problems, cancer, diabetes etc and target for designing new and effective therapies. In addition to Human Genome, research related to plant and animal Genomes with an endeavor to have better breeds and greater productivity. Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) is playing a proactive role to enhance the country’s competitiveness in Bio-informatics
