The Electronics and IT sector is characterized by fastest emergence of new technologies leading to high rate of obsolescence leaving very short response time to absorb the technology, adopt the same and evolve new technologies/solutions. In addition, electronics is characterized by high velocity technology change leading to declining life cycle of products. Further, IECT is increasingly finding applications in all sectors of economy and is a key enabler in development of a country.
Keeping in view the above requirements, MeitY in November, 2014 had approved a scheme entitled “Scheme of Financial Assistance for setting up of Electronics and ICT Academies” for faculty/mentor development/ up-gradation to improve the employability of the students in engineering/ other streams. As per the Scheme approval, Seven (07) Electronics and ICT academies have been set up and are operational at 7 premier and leading academic institutions viz. (i) NIT Warangal (Telangana), (ii) IIITDM Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), (iii) IIT Guwahati (Assam), (iv) NIT Patna (Bihar), (v) IIT Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), (vi) IIT Roorkee (Uttarakhand) and (vii) MNIT Jaipur (Rajasthan). The total target under the scheme is to train 92,800 Faculties. Each Academy is expected to generate revenue by charging fee and taking up other activities and become self-sustainable at the end of the project. The scheme would lead to enhancement of the skills of the students in the Electronics and ICT sector. The Ministry had earlier setup two ICT Academies in Tamil Nadu and Kerala respectively.
Objective of Each Academy:
- To focus on improving the quality of faculty of institutes, colleges in the respective states/UTs by organising faculty training programmes
- Engineering, Polytechnics etc in emerging areas of electronics & IT;
- Arts, Commerce & Science colleges, etc on utilisation of IT tools and techniques for application in their respective domain of knowledge/learning/teaching/enhancing productivity
- To develop state-of-the-art facilities like technical labs, well equipped library, interactive virtual learning facility, etc.
As per the original scheme approval, the total outlay of the scheme was Rs 147.48 crores with duration of 5 years. With the approval of the competent authority the scheme has been extended upto 31.03.2022 (total duration 7 years & 5 months) with the revised outlay of Rs. 87.69 Crore and duration of the scheme has been revised.
