Gas Delivery Systems/ Handling of Gas Cylinders

DO's

  • Handle the gas cylinders/gas cabinets or pressurized lines, only if you are trained/skilled to do so.
  • Know the contents of your compressed gas cylinder/line.
  • Always secure the cylinders to the wall or firm support by means of chain, strap or other acceptable device.
  • Valve protection cap shall be removed only if the cylinder has been secured.

DON'Ts

  • Never do the adjustment, tightening or loosening of lines and fittings, when pressure is present on a system.
  • Safety devices and safety locking must never be altered/bypassed.
  • Cylinder shall not be dragged or rolled. They shall be moved with suitable trolley.
  • Cylinders must never be dropped or allowed to strike each other or another object.
  • Do not allow oil or grease to come in contact with Oxygen cylinder valves, regulator, gauges or fittings of Oxygen Distribution System.
  • Never try to remove the dirt from the valve nozzle by opening the cylinder valve. Always use compressed air jet for doing so. Don't store chemicals near the source of heat?
  • In no case should the cylinder be subjected to a temperature higher than 125 Degree Fahrenheit.
  • Do not panic while on the job on compressed gas system.

DO's

  • Always report/attend to the leakage from any compressed gas system including compressed dry air system.
  • Regular medical check-ups shall be carried out for the persons handling toxic and hazardous gases.
  • While working on CRYOGENIC SYSTEMS, always wear safety glasses and designated gloves as serious cold burns may result from skin contact with this material.

DON'Ts

  • Full and empty cylinders shall not be stored together. Serious suck-back can occur if an empty cylinder is attached to the pressurized system.
  • Don't work alone on the toxic/ hazardous gas systems.
  • Do not handle compressed gas systems if you are under the influence of Alcohol/drug etc. or are feeling sleepy.
  • Don't fiddle with gas cylinders/regulators/valves/flow meters etc. which do not pertain to your work.
